The reliable offline race timer for time trials, handicap races, and chase-style events.
Timing Mate lets a single volunteer record finishers, manage bibs, and export results with one phone — no
Wi-Fi, no mobile data, no accounts. Built for 5K time trials, club handicap races, cross-country, track
sessions, and any athletics race where one person needs to capture every finish accurately.
Timing Mate is an iOS race timing app built for running clubs and community athletics
events. It records finish times, sorts results, and exports them as CSV or TXT — all without an internet
connection. Whether you're timing a remote fell race, a parkrun-style 5K time trial, a track session, or
a club handicap event, Timing Mate keeps every split safe on your device.
Designed by a club volunteer, every feature exists because a real race needed it: cluster recovery for
tightly packed finishes, missed-start recovery for chaotic handicap starts, and bib autocomplete so the
person on the line is timing the race instead of typing.
Features
Everything a single timing official needs to run an event from start to share.
Standard time trials & handicap races
Pick the format when you create the event. Standard mode runs a master clock from Start Race.
Handicap mode records each runner's personal start time, with the gun firing on the first start so
the leader is always at 0:00.
Pre-load competitors
Add runners by bib, gender, and age group before race day so taps during the event capture finishes,
not data entry. Latecomers can be added mid-race.
Haptic SPLIT feedback
Press SPLIT and feel an instant vibration. Keep your eyes on the finish line, not the screen.
Flexible bib assignment
Tap a competitor tile to assign the next finisher in real time — or rapid-tap SPLIT during a cluster
and assign bibs to slots afterwards.
Cluster recovery with “? Skip”
Can't identify a runner in a tight finish? Tap the purple “? Skip” tile to mark the slot and keep
assigning the bibs you do know. Resolve unknown entries later from the Results page.
Missed-start recovery (handicap)
Tap REC START for any runner whose bib you didn't catch crossing the start line. A pending strip
lets you match each anonymous start to a bib once the rush is over.
Edit individual start times
Long-press a handicap competitor to adjust their personal start to an exact mm:ss from the gun.
Reorder finishers safely
Switch to Reorder mode for up/down arrow controls. Position numbers update live, so an accidental
drag can't ruin your results.
DNS / DNF / DQ
Long-press any bib to set status. After Finish Race, any started runner without a finish is
automatically classified DNF.
Handicap-aware live results
Each row shows start-from-gun, finish-from-gun and personal time on one compact line, plus an
S1/S2/… rank for the order runners crossed the start line. Group results by gender or age group.
By Line / By Time toggle
Switch between order-crossed-the-line and fastest-personal-time at the tap of a button. Perfect for
chase races where both orderings matter.
Name autocomplete
Start typing a competitor's name and Timing Mate suggests matches from your previous events,
populating gender and age group in one tap.
Lockable results
Finish the race to lock the data and prevent accidental edits. Reopen if you really need to.
CSV & TXT export
One-tap export to text, email, AirDrop or social media. Handicap CSVs include StartFromGun and
FinishFromGun columns; standard CSVs are unchanged.
Completely offline
No mobile data or Wi-Fi required. Perfect for forest, fell, moor, and rural club venues with no
signal.
Private by design
All competitor data, splits, and results stay on your device. No accounts. No cloud. No telemetry.
New in the latest version
Handicap race mode
Handicap mode gives every competitor their own personal start time — ideal for chase-style races and
club handicap events where the slowest runner sets off first and the fastest closes the gap. Timing
Mate handles the staggered starts and presents results that make sense at a glance.
Auto-zeroed gun
The master clock arms when you tap Start Race, then fires automatically on the first runner's start
tap. The lead-off competitor is always recorded at 0:00.
Personal start tiles
Tap a competitor on the Starts page as they cross the line to log their personal start time.
S1/S2/… ranks make the start order easy to read.
REC START for missed runners
Didn't catch a bib at the start line? Capture the start anonymously, then match it to a bib in the
pending strip once the rush is over.
Edit Start Time sheet
Long-press a started competitor to set their personal start to an exact mm:ss from the gun — useful
for adjusting handicap offsets after the fact.
By Line / By Time toggle
Switch between order-of-finish (who crossed the line first) and fastest personal time. Tap to flip
the classification at any point during or after the race.
Implicit DNFs
Any runner who started but never finished is automatically classified DNF when you tap Finish Race
— no manual clean-up.
How it works
1
Create the event
Choose Standard or Handicap. Add competitors by bib, name, gender and age group — or let name autocomplete fill the gaps from previous races.
2
Time the race
Tap Start Race. In handicap mode, tap competitors as they cross the start line. As runners finish, tap their tile or rapid-tap SPLIT and assign bibs afterwards.
3
Share the results
Tap Finish Race to lock the data, group results by gender or age group, then export as CSV or TXT via email, AirDrop, or any share sheet target.
Frequently asked questions
Does Timing Mate work without an internet connection?
+
Yes. Timing Mate is built for venues with no mobile signal. All race timing, competitor records,
splits, and results are stored locally on your iPhone. You never need Wi-Fi or mobile data to time
a race or export results.
Can Timing Mate handle handicap and chase-style races?
+
Yes. Choose Handicap when you create the event. Each competitor gets a personal start time, the gun
fires automatically on the first start so the leader is always at 0:00, and live results show
start-from-gun, finish-from-gun, and personal time on a single line. A By Line / By Time toggle
switches between order-of-finish and fastest personal time.
Can I time a 5K time trial or parkrun-style event?
+
Yes. Pick Standard mode when creating the event. Tap Start Race to run the master clock, then tap
SPLIT as each runner finishes — or rapid-tap SPLIT during a cluster and assign bibs to slots
afterwards. A single official with one phone can time a club 5K end to end.
What if I miss recording a runner crossing the start line in a handicap race?
+
Use the REC START button on the Starts page. The anonymous start is captured on a pending strip, and
you can match it to a bib once the rush is over. You can also long-press a started competitor to set
their personal start to an exact mm:ss from the gun.
Can I fix mistakes after recording a finish?
+
Yes. Switch to Reorder mode to move finishers up or down with arrow controls — positions update live
so a stray drag cannot break your results. Use the purple “? Skip” tile for unknown bibs mid-cluster
and resolve them later from the Results page.
Can I export results?
+
Yes. One-tap CSV and TXT export to text, email, AirDrop, or any share sheet target. Handicap CSVs
include StartFromGun and FinishFromGun columns; standard CSV exports are unchanged.
Is competitor or race data shared, uploaded, or tracked?
+
No. Timing Mate has no accounts, no cloud sync, and no telemetry. All competitor data, splits, and
results stay on the device that ran the event unless you choose to
share it.
Other timing apps in the App Store are free — why is Timing Mate paid?
+
Free apps are usually paid for another way: adverts, accounts, or the sale of the data you put into
them. Timing Mate does none of that. There are no ads, no accounts, and no telemetry, and we never
collect or sell your personal data or your competitors’ race results — so a one-off purchase is the
only thing funding the app. You pay once, your club’s data stays yours, and every feature works
forever with no subscription.
What happens if my phone breaks or I delete the app? Is my data backed up?
+
Timing Mate stores all data locally on your iPhone, which means it is included in your standard iOS
device backups. If iCloud Backup is enabled (Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup) or you
back up to a Mac or PC, your events, competitors, and results will be restored when you set up a new
iPhone or reinstall the app from that backup. Deleting the app from a device removes its local data
— uninstalling Timing Mate without restoring from a backup will lose any events you have not
exported. As a habit, export the CSV or TXT results after each race so you always have a copy of
your results outside the app.
Can I mark DNS, DNF, or DQ?
+
Yes. Long-press any bib to set status. After you tap Finish Race, any started runner without a
finish is automatically classified DNF.
